{"id":4021,"date":"2023-12-29T19:59:41","date_gmt":"2023-12-30T00:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/romeyn.me\/?p=4021"},"modified":"2023-12-29T19:59:41","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T00:59:41","slug":"a-day-in-the-life-birthday-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/romeyn.me\/?p=4021","title":{"rendered":"A Day In The Life &#8211; Birthday Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"p1\">Yesterday was my 55th birthday.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was not remarkable as days go.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As a birthday, I think the most significant thing it represents is that my health insurance plan is now \u201cportable.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some day when I elect to leave the service of the State of New York, I will be able to keep my health insurance coverage for a very reasonable premium.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While I have no plans, that is a nice thing to have tucked in the back of my brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here\u2019s how my day went:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Woke at <strong>7:00am<\/strong>. Slept reasonably well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Shower and dress.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Feed cats.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Breakfast: Eggs, toast, sausage, coffee<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Watched a YouTube video<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>8:00am<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Empty\/fill dishwasher<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Organize recyclables<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Get\/read mail<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Put plow on truck<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Open birthday cards\/present<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Watch TV with Amanda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>9:00am<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Key Bank, Plattsburgh &#8211; withdraw some cash in anticipation of needing some in the next few days.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Plattsburgh Spring &#8211; I realized not long ago that Dad\u2019s plow did not have \u201cfeet\u201d to keep it from digging into ground if it runs off the pavement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I picked some up along with a power port adapter that \u201csplits\u201d the single port the truck has into 2, along with 2 USB-A ports and a USB-C port.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Barber.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I recently learned that the spot where I got my very first haircut from a barber was once again a barber shop!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I decided I\u2019d treat myself, even though there\u2019s not much for anyone to really do with what little is left of my hair.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I walked in to Minglewood Barber Shop and a tiny wave of nostalgia hit me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I remember Red Badger, my barber.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I could picture my Dad in his chair reaching under the smock and into his pocket to get me a penny for the gumball machine by the door (he always had one!).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I looked around at the artifacts on the counter&#8211;the owner was a collector of antique shaving things.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was an antique couch which seemed a little out of place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But it sure smelled like a barber shop!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My nostalgia bubble was abruptly burst by the barber asking me if I had an appointment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wasn\u2019t quite sure how to answer that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was a barber shop&#8211;barber shops don\u2019t \u201cdo\u201d appointments!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You show up, park your butt in a chair if one is available, and you wait your turn while you listen to the local gossip and\/or politics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are no \u201cappointments\u201d!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I said I didn\u2019t have an appointment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He looked at his phone and said he didn\u2019t have anything for the rest of the week.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I said something like, \u201ctoo bad&#8230;\u201d and left.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Call me a grumpy old man and I won\u2019t care, but I won\u2019t be going back.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Auto Zone &#8211; One of the windshield wipers on the truck was starting to scrape.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I replaced it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remember when auto parts stores had books where you could look up your make and model and be told which wiper or oil filter you needed?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those are gone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019d better have a smart phone and trust their QR codes and look it up on your phone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or ask at the counter.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Kinney Drugs &#8211; Picked up COVID test kits.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Amanda tested positive on Christmas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve had no symptoms, but want to be sure as we have plans for New Year\u2019s Eve that don\u2019t involve staying home!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>11:00am &#8211;
