This past weekend I went to church for the first time in a long time. \u00a0Lent is soon upon us, and our priest had some suggestions in the way of Lenten observance.<\/p>\n
There seems to be a \u201cpush\u201d on the part of the Catholic Church to evangelize more. \u00a0Evangelization\/Proselytization has never been anywhere on my to-do list because for me such behavior is in direct conflict with the Golden Rule, which I attempt to hold above all others: Do Unto Others That Which You Would Have Others Do Unto You. \u00a0I don\u2019t want people walking up to me unsolicited and trying to \u201csell\u201d me anything, be it their faith or a vacuum cleaner or a condo in Las Vegas; so I don\u2019t go around telling people what I believe, let alone telling them why they ought to believe it too! \u00a0Now if someone comes up to me and ASKS me about my Faith and wants to have a conversation, that\u00a0might be different (depending on the context of the question\/conversation).<\/p>\n
But the priest floated an interesting idea that I think I can actually get behind. \u00a0He urged us to take to social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and, on each of the seven Wednesdays of Lent, make a post that begins something like, \u201cMy Faith is important to me because\u2026\u201d. \u00a0The more I think about it, the less of a problem I have with it. \u00a0Facebook in particular is the ultimate tool of broadcast-based narcissism. \u00a0It is a bulletin board for your soul. \u00a0What you post there is there for anyone you want to to read\u00a0if they choose to. \u00a0You are not \u201cin their face.\u201d \u00a0You are not writing on THEIR Facebook wall, after all. \u00a0It is not for anyone to judge you or refute you or even argue with you (unless you invite it), and if they do you can just delete their posts! \u00a0And anyone who decides they don\u2019t like what you have to say doesn\u2019t have to read it, even to the point of de-friending\/un-following you so that they never have to see it again.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s perfect.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll decide to participate, but I\u2019m thinking about it. \u00a0It\u2019s in interesting idea.<\/p>\n
